Global Now, we’re heading to Germany. We have our Frankfurt correspondent 최경헌 connected via Zoom. Hello?(인사)

Guten Abend! Hello to the audiences of <KOREA NOW> and good evening, in Korean time. It is the second time to deliver news as a correspondent in Germany.

Q1> On November 15th, a missile landed on Polish territory near the Ukrainian border, killing two of its people. We know that it’s been concluded that the missile strike was unintentional and likely fired by Ukraine, but because of this incident, more European citizens are fearing the spread of war. Germany offered to send an anti-missiles system to Poland.

The German government is going to support the air defense system for the Polish government. Due to the missile incident that happened in Poland, it seems that the involvement of NATO countries in the war is escalated.

On 24th November, the Polish government rejected the support, stressing that the anti-missile system and Patriot missiles should be instead sent to Ukraine, not to Poland.

To this, Germany’s Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht(크리스틴 렘브레시트) mentioned the duty of agreement from all NATO countries when the defense system from NATO is used the outside of NATO territory.

Q2>Germany has offered the anti-missiles system to other regions in Europe. Please tell us what kind of systems are dispatched and to where it was sent.

The anti-missile shield was first announced by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in a speech in Prague in August when he said the country would invest significantly in its air defense over coming years as the continent had “a lot of catching up to do.”

He said such an integrated system would be more efficient and cost-effective than if each nation built its complex systems.

According to a cover released last month by Bloomberg, at least 15 countries have signed a letter of intent to join a long-term German project to create a European anti-missile shield.

They are mainly of NATO military alliance including the U.K. and the Netherlands. Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic as well as Slovenia, and Belgium also signed on to the plan.

Q3> Recently a video of a German IRIS-T blowing a Russian Kalibr cruise missile away got a lot of attention from the public. How much support has Ukraine received from Germany?

The IRIS-T(아이리스), so-called “InfraRed Imaging System Tail” SLM system is a medium-range air defense system developed by Diehl Defence(딜 디펜스), which is intended to provide protection against aerial threats including missiles and aircraft. The IRIS-T SL missile is a further development of the old one used in the short-range variant of the system.

On 9 November 2022, the German government revealed that it had supplied additional IRIS-T SL missiles to Ukraine, to arm the IRIS-T SLM battery previously delivered to Ukraine on 11 October 2022. The additional missiles were present in a list of military assistance to Ukraine published on 9 November by the German government.

The planned military support now also includes Iris-T SLM missiles, 42 mine clearing tanks, four mobile and protected mine clearing systems, three mobile, remote controlled, and protected mine clearing systems, and five mobile reconnaissance(정찰, 리커너센스) systems.
