While my classmates were giving their presentations, I noticed some students dozing off or doing other work. Seeing this, I thought, “I hope everyone will pay attention when it’s my turn,” but I also wondered, “Maybe if I try a new and engaging presentation method, they’ll focus more.”
When I analyzed why previous presentations failed to hold people’s attention, I realized that most slides were filled with long texts and small images, making them visually dull and hard to follow.
So, I decided to use my strength—video production—as my presentation format. To make it more engaging, I created all the images by hand-drawing them myself. Instead of typing text on a computer, I recorded myself writing by hand on camera, making the images and words flow dynamically throughout the video.
For example, when explaining the idea that “you can just move your hands when it’s hard to change the channel while holding fried chicken,” my video showed a hand-drawn picture of chicken with handwritten text next to it saying “Just move your hands!.” As the video played, I moved my hands up and down while explaining in English to my classmates.
Their reaction was incredible. No one was dozing off or distracted anymore. Even those who had been doing other work looked up and focused as soon as the video began. Everyone listened attentively, and their engagement gave me even more energy and confidence, helping me finish my presentation successfully.
When I concluded, the room erupted in applause and cheers. My classmates complimented me, asking how I came up with the idea of presenting through a video. My English teacher praised it as an original and creative presentation and gave me a perfect score.
Through this experience, I learned that using an innovative and visually engaging presentation method not only captures the audience’s attention but also generates a positive response. It also sparked my interest in cognitive science, particularly in understanding how “visual modes of communication” can influence human perception and focus.
